Contemporary Creative Practice
by Hannah Klomp
I believe that the words, communication, colour and medium specificity are critical in thinking about creative practice today. Whilst viewing a piece of creative work, the viewer is being communicated to in a way that results in a different meaning for each individual part of the audience. I think communication is quite important to creative practice, as most artists today are hoping to either communicate with their audience about a particular idea or are communicating through their artwork to encourage the audience to create their own ideas. Colour is also important whilst thinking about creative practice as it is a very strong force in impacting the audience in a way that’s indeed very powerful. For example, colour can be used to convey emotions in a piece of work, or even advertising being that yellow may symbolise happiness whilst blue may represent sadness or fear. Overall the use of colour in creative practice can be extremely important whilst thinking about creative practice. The final word in which is an integral part of creative practice is that of medium specificity. The idea of Marshall McLuhan being that ‘the medium is the message’ really emphasises the idea that different mediums can create different dialectical messages to an audience, therefore being critical in thinking about creative practice today. In evaluation, the words communication, colour and medium specificity are all critical in studying and enjoying creative practice today.
